Painting and staining

A painting or staining quote should explain the preparation as clearly as the final colour. Cottage Contracting reviews interior and exterior painting and staining inquiries, including finish work associated with other property or construction projects. Tell us what needs coating and what finish is currently on the surface.

Assess the surface first

Photographs of peeling areas, worn finishes and previous repairs help establish the starting point. Cleaning, scraping, sanding, filling and other preparation should be identified for the specific material. A new coating is not a substitute for addressing underlying damage or unresolved moisture problems.

Agree on products and finish expectations

Share colours, sheen or stain preferences and any known product history. Product selection and suitability need confirmation for the surface and exposure. The quote should specify the areas included and the agreed preparation and application work, rather than assuming that every adjacent surface will be refinished.

Separate crew and specialist work

Painting may be undertaken within a broader project or quoted as a separate finish scope. Confirm which crew or specialist is responsible, who supplies materials and how work is coordinated with carpentry, drywall or exterior repairs. Finish painting is not automatically included in a quote for those earlier tasks.

Plan access and timing

For exterior work, weather and surface conditions affect scheduling. For occupied interiors, discuss furniture, access and use of the rooms. Send your location, current photos, approximate areas and timing through the project inquiry so the work and availability can be reviewed.
